georeferenced image

Agustin Lobo
I have a georeferenced image in envi format but do not find
the way to display it with map coordinates and overlay a shape file.
All I find is the way
to georeferencing an image, but mine is already georeferenced.
Any explanation or pointer to the appropriate help page appreciated!

You can display a lat/lon layer by checking the box marked GEO_RESULTS
in the Windows tab of the Session Explorer.
You may need to expand the tree by clicking on the '+' button beside
your window.
The georeference dialog also has a checkbox to show this layer.

As for shapefiles, once you have georeferenced the data, you should be
able to drag and drop the .shp file onto Opticks.
There is a known issue where this sometimes fails the first time you do
it -- just drag-and-dropping the file after dismissing the error dialog
should fix the problem.

Do you mean the "Geographic Features Window"? I do not see anything
labeled GEO_RESULTS.
At reading the image, I get
"No georeference plug-ins are able to georeference the raster data
without additional input. The data will not be georeferenced."
Is this why I do not have de GEO_RESULTS window?
Anyway, my hdr is correct and states
map info = {UTM, 1.000, 1.000, 644685.000, 7150465.000,
3.0000000000e+001, 3.0000000000e+001, 19, South, WGS-84, units=Meters}
coordinate system string =

As a follow up, I've tried with a geotif file.
In this case I do not have the aforementioned warning message and I
can click a GEO_RESULTS box, but do not see any new info.
Actually, the coordinates are not displayed and the info that is
displayed at the bottom is wrong
(see attachment): "UTM: (E0 Zone 6, NO)"

I don't believe our standard ENVI importer supports corner/pix size
georeference data which is probably what is causing the problem. You can
try selecting the Generic GDAL Importer in the import dialog and see if
that loads your georeference data correctly (it uses GDAL instead of the
native importer)

1. The envi file imported with gdal generic importer: same problem as
with the native Envi importer
("No georeference plug-ins are able to georeference the raster data
without additional input. The data will not be georeferenced.")
Note that gdal imports fine this file into qgis and R.

2. The geotif file imported by gdal generic importer: (bad) surprise:
same warning as for the envi file:
"No georeference plug-ins are able to georeference the raster data
without additional input. The data will not be georeferenced."

3. The geotif file imported using the Auto Importer: No warning, but
wrong coordinates (see my previous message).

I think your best bet is to use the GeoTIFF file with the Auto Importer
or GeoTIFF Importer since the importer will actually perform the
georeferencing.  Sometimes for spatially large raster data areas, the
georeferencing capability may have some amount of error, which makes the
grid displayed by the GEO_RESULTS layer draw incorrectly or sometimes
not at all.  After loading the GeoTIFF, you can try the following to
check the quality of the data:

1) In addition to the "GEO_RESULTS" layer, there should also be a
"Corner Coordinates" GCP layer.  Open the GCP Editor from the Tools
menu, make sure the "Corner Coordinates" GCP list is current, and verify
that latitude/longitude values of the GCPs at the corners of the scene
match the values provided by gdalinfo.
2) Also in the GCP Editor, check the RMS Error values, which provide an
indication of how much error exists in the georeferencing results.
Larger numbers indicate more error.
3) If the GEO_RESULTS layer is displaying UTM coordinates, try changing
to latitude/longitude coordinates, which may draw the grid better.  Open
the Properties dialog for the GEO_RESULTS layer by right-clicking on the
layer name in the Session Explorer and clicking Properties.  In the
Coordinates section, change the type from UTM to Latitude/Longitude.
4) With latitude/longitude coordinates displayed, zoom in on the raster
data with the mouse wheel.  Drawing the coordinate grid works better if
a smaller area is visible within the window.
5) Import a shape file with the Auto Importer or Shape File Importer.
This should succeed if the raster data has been georeferenced.  The
positioning of the shapes in the shape file will help to demonstrate the
accuracy of the georeferencing.

same warning as for the envi file:

3. The geotif file imported using the Auto Importer: No warning, but
wrong coordinates (see my previous message).

I summarize my findings, which I think point some bugs:

I start by importing a correct geotif image using GeoTiff Importer. No
warning or error messages.
I change the order of your advices by reasons you'll see obvious:

Some weird findings here.
3.1. If I select UTM, I have no coordinates displayed and the wrong
utm zone that you can observe
in the snapshot I sent:

3.2. If I select Latitude/Longitude and DDºMM'SS.SS'', I get both UTM
and latitude longitude, in the format
Geo: (S-7099694*0'13,651'', W-656978*0'39,307'')
3.3. If I select Latitude/Longitude and DD.ddd'', I get UTM only, in the format
Geo: (S-7099694,337125*, W-656978,394252*)
3.4. If I select Latitude/Longitude and DDºMM.MM', I get UTM only, in the format
Geo: (S-7099694, W-656978)

Font and size in Properties have no effect.
I'm fine with these formats, but the Properties dialog is wrong
A minor point: Note that the standard in coordinate systems is X,Y,
thus longitude, latitude

I have 5 GCPs displayed: corners and central one.

2.2. Why an RMS Error here? Why is Opticks doing any fitting here?
This is an image that has already been georeferenced,
the corners should be matched exactly.

If the shapefile is in the same projection, it is displayed but

Agus,

It seems like you have definitely found some kind of bug.  Obviously, the latitude/longitude coordinate display should not show values indicative of the UTM values.  I'm guessing that the problem with the coordinates is causing the layer to not draw a coordinate grid regardless of the zoom level and perhaps causing many of the other issues as well.

We have an issue and bug tracker (https://issues.opticks.org/) where you can create a bug report containing your specific findings.  Before submitting a new bug report, please check out the reporting guidelines here: http://opticks.org/confluence/display/opticks/Bug+and+Enhancement+Reporting+Guidelines.

Once the problem is entered into the system, we will be able to evaluate the possible cause of the problem and determine an appropriate fix.
